Even if the operation of the windscreen wipers on a 2CV may seem simple, it should be noted that this car’s wiper system underwent several development changes between its official launch in 1949 and the end of its production in 1990. In particular, there was a change from an originally mechanical system to an electric system in 1962. It is quite remarkable that while 2CVs have always been equipped with two wipers at the front and none at the rear, the prototype of the 2CV, which was designed before the Second World War and was called TPV, had only one wiper blade on its windscreen, operated by means of a knob that manually drove the wiper control rod.

The different components of the 2CV windscreen wiper, which models to choose?

From the time of its launch at the Paris Motor Show in October 1949, the 2CV had two windscreen wipers and adopted mechanical operation. The button to switch them on is located under the speedometer. When the button is pressed, a cable activated by the speedometer sets the windscreen wipers in motion by means of a dedicated gear.
In September 1962, an electric system appeared with the 2CV AZU type. It is driven by an electric motor that has evolved over the decades. At first, it was a 6-volt motor adapted to the voltage of the electrical circuit of the models of the time. Equipping all vehicles produced until August 1965, it was gradually replaced by a 12-volt motor. The latter was first fitted to vehicles with a combustion heating system for extreme cold, as well as to AK350 EDF vans, before being introduced in 1970 with the launch of the 2CV 4 and 6.
Two generations of 12-volt motors followed one another, each with a specific arm crank and drive shaft. The first generation, originally manufactured by Marchal, has a 175-195 centre distance. The second generation, which appeared in the 1980s, was manufactured by Cibié and has a centre distance of 142-228.
Only the "Cibié" or "new model" motor is sold in our shop. On this page, you will find an adaptation kit allowing you to integrate this new motor model into an installation previously equipped with a Marchal type wiper motor, known as the "old model", and therefore with a different centre distance.

Several generations of 2CV wiper arms and blades

The first models of wiper blades were screwed onto the arm. With a length of 230 mm, they are available with either a black or chrome retaining strip, as are the corresponding arms, which are available in black or chrome stainless steel finish. These 2CV wipers are suitable for 6-volt installations.
The next generation incorporates wipers that are clipped onto the arms by means of a clip. In this shop you will find the Valeo model which is the original wiper model with a length of 240 mm. You can also order a model manufactured by ourselves, which has a more economic price, a length of 250 mm, and is one of our best-sellers, a chromed version is also referenced in our shop.
Please note that even if there are a certain number of common parts between the 2CV and its derivatives such as the Dyane or the Mehari, it should be noted that these latter vehicles are equipped with larger wipers than the 2CV, with a length of 277 mm.
Several models of dashboard switches to operate the electric windscreen wipers were also installed, depending on the period. The first model appeared in 1962 and is recognisable by its square head. This was followed by a rectangular button with an elliptical switch head. Finally, the round-headed buttons appeared in the interior of the 2CV until 1990.
