The 125R15 tyre: the reference tyre for the 2CV
The term 125R15 defines the dimensions of the tyre. 125 indicates the section width, i.e. the measurement in millimetres of the distance between the two sidewalls of the tyre when mounted unloaded on an appropriate size rim. The actual width of the car tyre may vary according to the manufacturer, but the variations may not exceed the tolerance threshold of 4%, i.e. 5 mm in the case of a 125R15 tyre. R or r indicates the type of structure of the tyre, i.e. the radial structure in the case of R. Instead of the letter R, one can also find D (diagonal carcass) or even ZR (high performance radial carcass) or RF (runflat), but none of these alternatives exists for the 2CV. In fact, equipped as standard with the 125 wide Michelin tyre, the 2CV adopted the radial technology launched by the Clermont-Ferrand based firm in October 1949. This technology, which was revolutionary at the time, has since become the reference technology because it increases the life of the tyre while limiting fuel consumption. The last parameter, the number 15, indicates the insertion diameter expressed in inches. This value corresponds to the diameter of the
2CV rim on which the tyre must be mounted. 15 inches is equivalent to 380 mm, which is the diameter of the tyres fitted on the 2CV since September 1959. During the first 10 years of its existence, all examples of the famous Citroën twin-cylinder had 400 mm diameter tyres (
125 R 400 reference) before switching to 380 mm. From 1959 until the end of production in 1990, all 2CV saloon models were fitted with the Michelin X 125 x 15 tyre or 125R15 X tyre. Only the various 2CV van models launched from 1951 onwards with a higher payload were fitted with slightly wider 135 15 tyres for which there were also all-season models.
