  What were the different 2CV gearbox models?

  The 2CV gearbox has four forward gears and one reverse gear. Its highly compact design has evolved over the years to improve driving comfort and gear ratios. The most recent models feature a smoother gearbox better suited to the 2CV’s 602cc engine.
  Another distinctive feature of the 2CV is its famous horizontal gear lever, often nicknamed the ‘trombone’, which runs across the dashboard. This simple yet ingenious system has become a true hallmark of the Citroën brand. Furthermore, the gearbox is coupled directly to the engine, held in place by silent blocks that absorb vibrations and movements from the powertrain. The 2CV clutch is situated between the engine and the gearbox, whilst each 2CV driveshaft runs directly from the gearbox to the corresponding 2CV wheel.
  When the 2CV was launched in 1949, only third gear was synchronised, and fourth forward gear did not yet exist. The first two gears often required double-declutching for a smooth change. From 1955 onwards, Citroën gradually modified the gear ratios and introduced several improvements in successive stages leading up to the introduction of the 2CV 4 and 2CV 6, which led to the creation of the latest generations of the 2CV gearbox. These same models were used on the AK, Dyane, Acadiane and Méhari vans, with gear ratios sometimes tailored to the vehicle’s weight or whether it was intended for commercial use.

  The 2CV’s drivetrain consists of four main components: the gearbox, the driveshafts, the clutch and the 2CV hubs. The quality of these components is essential to ensure a smooth and safe drive.   What maintenance is required for the 2CV gearbox?

  Over time, certain symptoms may indicate wear and tear on the gearbox: creaking when changing gears, difficulty engaging a gear, oil leaks or unusual noises whilst driving. A service or overhaul may then be necessary.
  In any case, ensuring the gearbox is perfectly lubricated makes it easier to use and reduces wear on its components. To achieve this, we recommend checking the gearbox oil level every 5,000 km, then, approximately every 20,000 km, draining the oil and replacing it with fresh oil. The choice of fresh oil is crucial. You need an oil that is fluid enough when cold to lubricate the gearbox properly on start-up, and thick enough when hot to protect the gears. The ideal compromise is a 75W90 grade oil, as recommended by the manufacturer, which you can find in various sizes on this page.
