What is the purpose of the wheel hub on a 2CV?
The hub is the central component that connects the wheel to the vehicle’s mechanical system. At the front, the steering hub forms part of the steering system and receives the drive transmitted from the
2CV’s gearbox to the drive wheel, as the 2CV is front-wheel drive. At the rear, the wheel hub is mounted on the brake drum and supports the entire wheel so that it rotates freely. In both cases, it is the wheel bearing housed inside the hub that allows the wheel to turn without excessive friction or play, whilst withstanding the forces associated with the vehicle’s weight, braking and road irregularities.
2CV wheel bearings: function and maintenance
The wheel bearing is a wear-prone component that should be checked regularly: a worn bearing usually results in a dull, continuous noise, which is more pronounced when cornering, or noticeable play when shaking the wheel by hand whilst the vehicle is raised. Our catalogue offers ready-to-fit front and rear wheel bearing kits, as well as individual bearings with a diameter of 72 mm for the 2CV and 76 mm for the AK400 and Acadiane vans. Elastic bearing retaining rings, which protect the bearings from dust and moisture, as well as mounting rings (with or without a chamfer, including repair sizes) are useful additions to any repair job. For clean removal without applying excessive force to the hub, we recommend using a
wheel bearing ring removal tool (ref. 1507520) specifically designed for this operation.
2CV grease caps, wheel studs and hub accessories
Our range also includes all the small accessories essential for the complete reassembly of the 2CV hub: 2CV rear grease cap, available in a bichromate, silver or black plastic finish,
rear brake drum nut, rear hub cap lock washer for pre-1959 vehicles, as well as front wheel studs designed to securely fasten the
2CV rim to the hub. These parts, although often small, play an essential role in the safety and sealing of the hub-bearing-drum assembly. You can see how these various parts fit together in our illustrated technical diagrams, whether for
front or
rear 2CV wheel bearings.
