What is the purpose of an ignition coil?
The coil stores the current supplied by the battery and then delivers it to the 2CV engine's spark plugs at specific times in the form of a high voltage current. This current is used by the spark plugs to produce sparks in the engine cylinders. The sparks trigger the combustion of the petrol, which in turn drives the movement of the engine pistons. The ignition coil synchronises the different combustions within each cylinder by managing the creation of sparks for each spark plug.
One or more ignition coils on your 2CV?
The two-cylinder engine of the famous Citroën and all its derivative models has only one coil that distributes the current to all the spark plugs. Modern engines, however, often have several coils. These do not have an integrated distributor cap, an accessory that allows different spark plugs to be powered at the same time. In this case, the coil can only handle a maximum of one or two spark plugs and is often positioned directly on them.
Complete ignition kit or single coil?
Our online shop offers you different models of 2CV ignition coils which are sold individually or grouped together in a coil kit including the 2CV ignition coil, the spark plug leads, two spark plugs and their seals. It is advisable to change all these parts when fitting an electronic ignition to your little Citroën, as this will give you more power and reliability, improve your starts and reduce your consumption and pollution.
The choice of your coil is directly linked to that of your ignition. To help you select the most suitable model for your vehicle, visit the dedicated page on our

Which model of 2CV ignition coil for my car?
The choice of the coil depends first of all on the voltage of the electrical circuit of your 2CV which will be either 6 volts for the older models (all models until 1965 and some models until 1970), or 12 volts which is the voltage that was generalised on all 2CV from February 1970. We offer only one model of 2CV 6V coil, a quadripole model compatible with all types of ignition, whether electronic or with points and condenser. Amongst our different models of 2CV 12v ignition coils is our original model, also compatible with all ignitions. It is still manufactured by Ducellier, the historical Citroën supplier, using the original materials and following the plans of the brand with the chevrons. We also manufacture an alternative more economical model, reference 154005, which is made in compliance with the manufacturer's specifications. Finally, two higher performing models complete our range: our famous "high performance" 2CV dry ignition coil and our electronic 12V coil. The 12V dry coil (reference 1540030) requires an electronic ignition on your 2CV. Benefiting from the latest technological advances, it does not incorporate any coolant, hence its name "dry coil", which eliminates any risk of leakage. It provides almost 30% more voltage than a conventional model, with much greater spark power and optimised charging time. The last model in the range is our 12V electronic coil designed to work exclusively with our electronic racing ignition.
You will also find in this page the coil holders allowing you to fix the coil as well as the ignition kits.
