Even though the mechanical gearbox of the 2CV has changed very little over the 42 years of production of this model, which is a symbol of the French automobile heritage, there still have been a certain number of modifications of the clutch mechanism over the period, with the latter however having remained single plate as was the case with the majority of vehicles of this period.

Different generations of 2 CV clutches

Till 1968, the clutch mechanism of the 2CV and Dyane 4 had a graphite thrust bearing, pressed steel fork operated from the top by a cable called “short” or “old model” in comparison with the cable of the next generations. Between 1948 and 1968, the main shaft of the gearbox changed leading to the increase in the number of splines of the 2CV clutch plates. 3 generations of plates followed: plate with 8 splines between the launch of the vehicle in 1948 and December 1955, clutch plate with 10 splines between January 1956 and April 1966, and then plate with 18 splines. This plate with 18 splines would have two models: the first between April 1966 and May 1968 when Citroën modified the clutch mechanism of the 2CV. And the second, from May 1968 till 1990, date of shut-down of the production of the 2CV in the Citroën-Lusitania de Mangalde factory in Portugal.
A new control system appeared during the famous month of May 1968. This system had a ball thrust bearing replacing the graphite one to ensure better longevity as there was faster wear and tear with graphite. It also had a clutch fork with enhanced rigidity that was operated from the bottom this time and required using a longer cable than in the past. This mechanism made the 2CV clutch a winner in terms of reliability and longevity.

What is a 2CV centrifugal clutch?

Strictly speaking, there is no such thing as a 2CV centrifugal clutch. This is a misnomer that refers to clutches that can be fitted to flywheels known as "centrifugal". Our 'centrifugal clutch' references are: ref. 6013300, ref. 6013301, ref. 6013302 and ref. 1013300. The latest generation flywheels were lighter than the previous centrifugal models, and the 2CV adopted modern diaphragm clutches for easier adjustment and greater reliability.
